Secretariat and ManO'War Revisited
Abstract
This article revisits the 1999 Blood_Horse Panel's selection and ranking of the century's best Thoroughbred racehorses with another discussion of the Secretariat/ManOWar placement. Regression modeling is used to 'age' the finishing times of two of Secretariat's races, the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, back to the year 1920 and thus compare and contrast them with the times of two of ManOWar's races run at similar distances and weights. This aging process accounts for era-contingent factors associated with the industry during the years in question. The modeling suggests that Secretariat outperformed ManOWar thus rekindling the placement debate between these two remarkable specimens.

Weave for the mighty chestnut
A tributary crown
Of autumn flowers, the brightest; then
When autumn leaves are brown
Hang up his bridle on the wall,
His saddle on the tree,
Till time shall bring some racing king
Worthy to wear as he!
